Decision rights: a map, not a matrix
Turn confusing RACI charts into a living decision map that keeps leadership out of the weeds.
Operating Model 7 min
Why RACI disappoints
RACI often clarifies roles on paper but doesn’t help with real decisions under pressure. It spreads accountability instead of locating it.
What a decision map is
A small list of recurring decisions, each with one clear owner and one visible escalation path.
- Define the decision in plain language.
- Assign a single accountable owner.
- List required inputs (who must be consulted, and when).
- Specify the time-to-decision expectation.
Implications
When decision rights are mapped, meetings shrink. People stop debating process and start making better calls faster.
